Roadmap to Building a Lead Generating Website for Local Businesses
Are you tired of feeling lost and overwhelmed when it comes to creating an online presence for your business? You know your business inside out, but this “online thing” is totally out of your wheelhouse? If so, you are TOTALLY NORMAL. You didn’t build a successful real life business because the tech was your expertise! 😂 I get it though… as entrepreneurs we are resourceful figure-it-outers by nature. Today we’re diving into the non-techy roadmap to building a profitable lead-generating website for your business. Yes, even if you’re more comfortable with hammers and nails than HTML and CSS, you can still get your company found online!
Plan/Manage Your Project Like A Boss
Building a brand and launching a website is no small feat. There are A LOT of moving parts and small details. It’s important to stay organized and manage your time effectively.
Consider using project management tools to keep track of tasks and deadlines, collaborate with team members if you have them, and communicate effectively. I use a combination of Google Drive Folders and a simple to use Trello board with my clients to map out their project, organize files, delegate tasks, and keep moving forward on schedule.
Teamwork Makes The Dream Work
Speaking of project management – remember, you’re not alone on this journey! Smart entrepreneurs create teams to get better and faster results. Collaboration with skilled labour keeps you in your zone of genius and allows you to borrow the expertise, experience, and skills of others — this is key when building a successful online presence. Whether it’s working with a graphic designer on your logo/graphics, a website developer to connect all your workflow apps, or getting feedback from customers on your new website, never underestimate the power of teamwork.
TIP: Assemble your team based on the tasks you can’t/don’t want to do first.
Build Your Brand Identity
Now, let’s talk about your branding. A brand is more than just your visuals (logo, colors, fonts, and graphics) — it also includes your business’s personality/vibe, your competitive edge AND your reputation. It’s a lot of things beyond the visuals… So how do you develop this crucial aspect of your business? Start with the strategic bits:
– Define what your business stands for, its values, and its mission.
– Identify your customers. Who are they? What do they want?
– Create your core marketing messages. What phrases/points do you repeat to almost all customers?
– THEN… Create a visual identity that reflects these aspects – think colors, typography, imagery.
Don’t worry if you’re not Picasso; tools like Canva make graphic design accessible to everyone! In fact I use it almost exclusively with my small business clients because its easy and fast to figure out for my clients who want to be able to make their own graphics and images quickly and on brand after our projects.
Design Your Website
Finally, let’s move on to the fun part (for me!) – designing your website. Remember, your website is often the first impression potential customers get of your business, so you want to get it looking hot and running smooth as butter.
Here’s where User Experience (UX) and User Interface (UI) design come into play. UX design ensures your website is easy to use and navigate while UI design focuses on the look and feel of your website.
A well-designed website should be:
– Easy to navigate
– Responsive (it should look good on all devices from widescreen to small smartphones)
– Visually appealing
– Reflective of your brand identity
Again, no need to become a coding whiz overnight. Platforms like WordPress paired with a drag and drop page builder like Elementor make creating beautiful websites a breeze.
Optimize Your Site for Search Engines
Alright, you’ve got a stunning website that perfectly encapsulates your brand. Great job! But now, we need to make sure people can actually find it when they type your name or the problems you solve into the ol’ Google Search.
Enter Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In layman’s terms, SEO is all about making your website friendly to search engine softwares. The better your SEO, the higher your website will rank in search results, and the more visibility you’ll get.
Some basic SEO strategies include:
– Using relevant search words and phrases (i.e. keywords) in your content
– Ensuring your website loads quickly
– Making your website mobile-friendly
– Regularly updating your website with fresh content
– Submitting your site to Google Search Console for indexing
Launch It With A Party
The creation and launch of a website represents a HUGE chunk of work and the creation of a money making asset. Celebrate it!
Do this with creative pre-launch and post-launch marketing campaigns to get the most eyes and traffic to your new site. AND don’t forget to pop some champagne for yourself and your team! 🍾
