Practice Donuts and Dry Runs: Why Testing First Makes Everything Smoother

Mom and Dad bring kids who are ready for school out for donuts and coffee.

Back-to-school mornings are always a little chaotic. Getting kids up, fed, packed, and out the door on time after a summer of lazy starts? Not exactly smooth sailing.

This year, we tried something new in our house: practice donuts. 🍩

One morning earlier this week, we set the alarm, hustled the kids through their routine, and got everyone out the door by 8:15 — just like we’ll need to for the school bus. But instead of sending them off to class, we hopped in the car and went for donuts.

The kids loved it, my husband and I got a much-needed reality check on the morning pace, and I walked away confident that we’re ready for the first week of school.

It wasn’t wasted time. It was a dry run that made feeling ready for the real thing easier.

Why Businesses Need Their Own “Practice Donuts”

Families aren’t the only ones who benefit from a test run. In business, doing a dry run before a big launch is one of the smartest moves you can make.

I build this right into my website design process. Every new site I create goes live on a secret password protected URL first — a hidden corner of the internet where we can click through every link, fill out every form, and double-check every page.

It’s like a dress rehearsal for your website launch. You get to see your website in action, test the flow, and fix the little bugs before anyone else lays eyes on it. By the time we hit “launch,” everything is running smoothly — and you can focus on celebrating, not troubleshooting.

The Bigger Lesson

Dry runs aren’t wasted time. They save you from messy surprises, boost your confidence, and give you space to work out the kinks.

Whether it’s a school morning routine, a new team workflow, or a website launch — a little practice up front makes the real thing smoother (and way less stressful).

Want Your Website Launch to Feel Smooth?

When I build websites for clients, the “practice run” is baked right into the process. You’ll know everything works, you’ll feel confident, and launch day will actually be fun.
